fildes.pngI finished my PhD in History in spring 2009. Towards the end of it, my focus was really just on finishing, not what was next. A week or so after I submitted, I started looking for jobs. I was never really interested in an academic career – I enjoyed my PhD but had no vocation for teaching and was aware of the ultra-competitive and precarious routes into research in my subject area. I submitted my thesis on the Friday and got my first job on the Wednesday following! I’d worked on a lot of different projects in public engagement and on studentship boards during my doctoral studies and I was keen to see where these different paths could lead. I’ve been at The University of Sheffield for thirteen years now, first as a student and now as a member of staff – I often joke that I’m institutionalised! I never really planned it that way, however, it just seems to be how my career and my personal life have conspired together through happenstance.

After my undergraduate degree (in History), I worked for three years in a bookshop, before securing a sales and marketing job in publishing.
